Pelvis

The pelvis is a ring of bones that protects your organs of the abdomen cavity while helping the muscles of the abdomen, thigh, and hip.

The pelvis acts as a hammock to support the vagina, uterus, rectum, and bladder. Pelvic disorders are caused by weakness of the muscles and nerves in the pelvic floor. Both men and women can suffer from pelvic disorders, but they are more common in women who have recently undergone vaginal childbirth. Infection and other substances in the urine can also cause problems with the pelvis.

Among the factors that contribute to pelvic disorders are connective tissue disorders, obesity, perineal tears, muscle strain, heavy lifting, trauma, surgery, and hysterectomy. During your first visit to a doctor, they will ask questions about your overall health and your medical history. After that, you will undergo a pelvic exam. The doctor will ask you to push down to examine your current condition and prescribe a treatment if you have a disorder.
