Postpartum Depression

Also known as postnatal depression, this kind of clinical depression is specifically associated with pregnancy and childbirth. It affects 1 in 7 women who have just given birth. Postpartum Depression may start in the first few weeks after your baby's birth, or within the baby's first year of life. First time moms and mothers with previous children can also experience this for the first time after subsequent births. Symptoms include the feeling of sadness and hopelessness, crying, and loss of interest in things or people around you. There may be a feeling of guilt about not bonding with your baby or the feeling of unreachable expectations about being able to care for your baby.

Any new mother can experience postpartum depression, but those higher at risk are those that have a history of depression if there is a high level of stress or problems in your life and young mothers who have no support. Hormone levels rise and drop suddenly through the course of giving birth; this can affect women in various ways and trigger mood changes and depression in some women. A doctor can diagnose this condition, but it's important to be aware of the symptoms in the first place, as many can go unnoticed or ignored.

Conditions

"Condition" is a general term for particular abnormal diseases that negatively affect a part or all of the body. Conditions are not due to any external injury. Therefore, a broken bone does not classify as a condition, whereas Herpes, OCD, Shingles, and Ulcers do.

Pregnancy is when a woman is carrying a child inside her womb for up to 40+ weeks before giving birth to a baby. This time is known as the gestation period. The embryo develops over the first eight weeks after conception, after which time it is then referred to as the fetus. The length of pregnancy is divided into three trimesters. The first trimester is from fertilization of the egg with sperm (conception), -12 weeks in the womb, the second trimester is week 13 – 28 and the third is weeks 28 – 40+ after which the baby is born.

Pregnancy is the way we reproduce. It comes about by either sexual intercourse or assisted reproductive technology such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Symptoms include missed periods, nausea or vomiting, loss and gain or appetite, frequent urination and tender breasts.

Every pregnancy will be experienced differently. Some women will feel all the symptoms, and other hardly any. Some women may have complications during pregnancy and others not. If you suspect you may be pregnant, you can go to the doctor for an official test, or take a home test, after which you'll need to see a doctor to confirm and then begin the prenatal care for the remainder of your pregnancy.
