5. Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NNRTIs)

NNRTIs take a different approach, unlike NRTIs and PIs, they protect new cells from infection by the HIV virus. The goals is still the same, slowing to spread of the virus to healthy cells slows the progression and prolongs the life of the infected patient. Unfortunately, the side effects of NNRTIs can be fatal including abnormal heartbeat and shortness of breath.
