Reproductive System

From conception to delivery, there are some significant differences between singleton and twin pregnancies.

Twin pregnancy

Amniocentesis is the procedure for obtaining a small amount of amniotic fluid, which surrounds a developing baby during pregnancy. The cells in the amniotic fluid contain genetic information. Collecting the fluid and cells lets medical professionals diagnose potential health risks to the mother or baby.

Pregnancy is when a woman is carrying a child inside her womb for up to 40+ weeks before giving birth to a baby. This time is known as the gestation period. The embryo develops over the first eight weeks after conception, after which time it is then referred to as the fetus. The length of pregnancy is divided into three trimesters. The first trimester is from fertilization of the egg with sperm (conception), -12 weeks in the womb, the second trimester is week 13 – 28 and the third is weeks 28 – 40+ after which the baby is born.

Pregnancy is the way we reproduce. It comes about by either sexual intercourse or assisted reproductive technology such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Symptoms include missed periods, nausea or vomiting, loss and gain or appetite, frequent urination and tender breasts.

Every pregnancy will be experienced differently. Some women will feel all the symptoms, and other hardly any. Some women may have complications during pregnancy and others not. If you suspect you may be pregnant, you can go to the doctor for an official test, or take a home test, after which you'll need to see a doctor to confirm and then begin the prenatal care for the remainder of your pregnancy.

Polyhydramnios occurs when there is too much amniotic fluid in the amniotic sac. This causes the uterus to grow excessively and can negatively affect fetal development. Polyhydramnios is most common later in pregnancy. The rare condition affects one to two percent of pregnancies.

Pregnancy is an exciting time. It's a unique experience that varies woman to woman. Some women have a positive experience with pregnancy, while others don't. We break pregnancies down into three trimesters. 

The first trimester shows how your body is adjusting to its new state. During this trimester, women can experience mood swings, weight gain, cramps, and cravings. Some women even begin to feel morning sickness at this point. 


 


The second trimester tends to be easier than the first. Nausea and fatigue might vanish as well. During this trimester, women can experience body aches, itchy/patchy skin, and swelling.


 


The third trimester is like a runner's last lap. The baby does its last bit of growing in this stage. In this trimester women may experience labored breathing, heartburn, and contractions. Once contractions begin happening frequently, the pregnancy's end is in sight!
