9. Possible Complications

Complications generally occur from the infection spreading. Acute epiglottitis — swelling of the flap that prevents food from entering the airway when swallowing — is one possible life-threatening complication. Studies show epiglottitis usually responds well to broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Other complications include upper airway construction due to the size of the abscess or the amount of swelling in the throat.
