4. Causes of Delusions

Delusions are almost always attributed to mental illnesses like schizophrenia, PTSD, and bipolar disorder, or long-term substance abuse involving stimulants. Severe neurotransmitter imbalances and structural abnormalities affecting the brain can lead to delusional thinking. Delusions may also be triggered by traumatic and stressful events that disrupt the regulation of neurotransmitters. Severe stress, head injury, alcohol, medications, social isolation, hearing impairment, or poor vision can also contribute to delusions.
