Situated between the epiglottis and the upper esophageal sphincter, the laryngopharynx connects with the voice box or larynx. Both food and air pass through this section of the pharynx. A smooth mucous membrane covers the laryngopharynx, the largest section of the pharynx. Located within the laryngopharynx are three regions: the pyriform sinus, the postcricoid area, and the posterior pharyngeal wall. Medical professionals also refer to the laryngopharynx as the hypopharynx.
