The process for abdominal thrusts or the Heimlich maneuver was first developed in 1974. While controversial due to the bruising and injury that can occur, the practice has proven to be life-saving. The person performing the maneuver should place their fist below the choking person's diaphragm, right at the bottom of their ribcage. Straddle the person from behind, bending them over slightly, and push the fist upwards. This can be repeated intermittently until the blockage is removed, or done in combination with repeated back blows.
