5. Conditions Requiring Bullectomies

Beyond the common symptoms, some conditions can cause bullae to form, or cause issues a bullectomy can solve.

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, better known as COPD, is a chronic lung disease leading to inflammation and airflow obstructions. Conditions that fall under the umbrella of COPD, such as emphysema, often lead to the formation of bullae.
  • Marfan syndrome is a genetic disorder that often causes heart issues. The risk of these issues dramatically increases with exercise, so most individuals with Marfan syndrome choose to avoid strenuous activities.
  • Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that causes various growths of tissue called granulomas to form. These growths can appear anywhere in the body, but most often affect the lungs.
