16. Risk factors and prevention

Multiple factors can increase the risk of liver dysfunction, including:

  • Ongoing moderate or heavy alcohol consumption
  • Having type 2 diabetes
  • Having obesity
  • Using shared needles to inject drugs
  • Having tattoos or body piercings
  • Having received a blood transfusion before 1992
  • Having unprotected sex
  • Coming into contact with blood and body fluids
  • Having contact with toxins or chemicals
  • Having a family history of liver disease

There are also some ways you can prevent liver dysfunction. These include:

  • Choosing not to drink alcohol or drinking in moderation
  • Avoiding risky behavior, like having unsafe sex and not sharing needles to inject drugs
  • Getting vaccinated for hepatitis
  • Being careful with medication
  • Staying away from blood and body fluids
  • Protecting your skin from chemicals
  • Wearing a mask when using bug sprays, paint, and other chemicals
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
