9. Life Expectancy and Complication

Doctors determine the severity of a case of emphysema by determining a person's forced expiratory volume/second, but this does not necessarily indicate the life expectancy of the patient. The final stage of emphysema is stage four, and it is very severe, with a short life expectancy. Smokers with emphysema are likely to develop complications more quickly than those who do not smoke.
