8. A Credible Back Story
Pairing Ponch and Jon together was a bit of a gamble as CHiP officers typically ride on their own. The show created a back story so that they could film the two together. Their backstory stated that Ponch was on probation and, therefore, wasn't allowed to patrol without the more watchful Jon at his side.
