The Great Lake State is one of the most beautiful in the U.S. and sometimes attracts retirees because of the relatively low cost of living--until they experience lake-effect snow. Michiganders are so used to heavy snow that schools, government, and businesses don't shut down, even in a blizzard. Michigan roads are also in poor condition, and the hamlets near the shores of the Great Lakes swarm with tourists during the summer.
