Manaslu is 8,163 meters (26,781 feet) above sea level and the eighth highest mountain in the world. The mountain is in Nepal in the Mansiri Himal range of the Himalayas. In the local Sanskrit language, Manaslu means "soul" reflecting the sacred respect the Nepalese have for this mountain.
The first team that reached the top were part of a Japanese expedition. Climbers Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu stood on the summit on the 9th of May 1956.
The unique location of Manaslu has created a relatively sheltered valley and mountain ecosystem, home to many endangered animals including the elusive Snow Leopard.
