As kidney disease progresses, the renal diet must change, too. Many end-stage renal patients are malnourished, which puts them at higher risk for mortality. They often lose their appetite due to the accumulation of toxins and require more protein.
If these patients cannot get enough calories and nourishment from eating food by mouth, tube feeding or IV nutrition may be necessary.
