Low magnesium is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Other symptoms include poor appetite, nausea and vomiting, weakness, tremors, muscle spasms, irritability, sleepiness, pins and needles in the extremities, and abnormal heart rhythms.

Magnesium deficiency is usually related to poor diet, but other risk factors include digestive problems, kidney disease, long-term vomiting and diarrhea, excessive alcohol consumption, and diuretic medications.
