An AST blood test is similar to any other blood test. A nurse, phlebotomist, or other healthcare professional uses a needle to get a blood sample from a vein in the arm.
Fasting is not strictly necessary for an AST test, but it is often ordered alongside other tests that do require 10 to 12 hours of fasting.
