Doctors will often order an ALT blood test as part of routine lab work or if someone is showing signs of liver damage. Because ALT can be elevated before any symptoms appear, doctors may order it and similar labs for people with a higher risk of liver disease.

These risks include obesity, a history of heavy drinking, diabetes, exposure to hepatitis, or a family history of liver disease. Symptoms that may point to liver issues include abdominal pain, jaundice, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, and itchy skin.
