A kidney infection is a painful condition caused by bacteria that travel from your bladder into one or both of the kidneys. Kidney infections are rare, and are more likely to occur in women. The symptoms of a kidney failure will usually develop rapidly over a period ranging from a few hours to a few days. The most commonly reported symptom is a pain in lower back of your genitals, or in the lower back.
