A kidney infection is a painful condition caused by bacteria that travel from your bladder into one or both of the kidneys. Kidney infections are rare, and are more likely to occur in women. The symptoms of a kidney failure will usually develop rapidly over a period ranging from a few hours to a few days. The most commonly reported symptom is a pain in lower back of your genitals, or in the lower back. As a result of the infection, a fever of up to 103.1F may be present; this may also lead to shivering or chills. 
Other symptoms may include: a feeling of weakness; being excessively tired; and diarrhea. If you also have urethritis (an infection of the urethra), you may also experience pain while urinating or blood in the urine. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is imperative to consult your doctor immediately. The treatment of a kidney infection will generally involve a course of antibiotics to be taken at home, as well as painkillers if needed.
