3. Fever

Diverticulitis can cause a fever. If chills also develop, it is possible the infection has spread to the abdomen, a condition called peritonitis. Some people might misinterpret these symptoms to the flu, which causes similar effects. If the fever and other flu-like symptoms do not resolve within 48 hours, it is best to see a doctor, especially individuals who are over the age of 40.
