Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms within a deep vein in the body. Such veins run deep in the muscles, transporting blood throughout the body. The leg is the most affected area by DVT. Even though anyone can develop DVT, it is more likely to occur in individuals of over 40 years of age as well as people with a family history of blood clots.

This is a very serious condition that warrants immediate medical attention. Some people will not develop any symptoms, but if there are any they will usually include: a feeling of pain or tenderness in the leg (usually the calf); a heavy ache in the affected area; warmth in the affected area; and lastly, red or irritated skin in or near the affected area.

In most cases, TVT can be treated by taking anticoagulant medication which limits the blood’s ability to form clots. Compression stockings may also be prescribed to treat pain and other symptoms.
