3. Modified Allen Test

In the modified version, a doctor tests each hand individually.

  1. The patient sits, elevates their hand, and clenches their first for about 30 seconds.
  2. The physician applies pressure to the ulnar and radial arteries in the elevated arm.
  3. While elevated, the patient opens their hand.
  4. The physician releases pressure on the ulnar artery while maintaining it on the radial artery.

This version of the Allen test allows doctors to examine the blood flow in a patient’s arteries more accurately.
