3. Role of Hormones

Androgens are sex hormones that play a significant role in sebum production. Testosterone increases sebum secretion, which explains why boys are more prone to skin problems during puberty than girls. However, research suggests that progesterone, a hormone involved in menstruation, increases sebum production in women the week before their periods. When estrogen and progesterone levels drop before menstrual flow, testosterone levels are comparatively higher. This could explain why many women experience increased oil production and breakouts just prior to their periods.
