8. What Can I Do To Help With Symptoms?

There are some things you can do to help alleviate your esophagitis. It should be pointed out there has been little research to prove how effective these changes will have in easing your reflux.

  • Quit smoking. The chemicals present in cigarettes relax the sphincter in the esophagus, allowing acids to make there way up. Your symptoms may be reduced if you decide to quit smoking.
  • Losing weight. If you are overweight, it causes extra pressure on your stomach, which encourages acid to flow upwards, causing acid reflux. Losing weight may help ease your symptoms.
  • Bedtime changes. For some people, changing their evening habits can help with symptoms. Go to bed on an empty stomach. Do not drink anything two hours before bedtime, and avoid any foods, even snacks, three hours before bedtime.
