5. Risk Factors of Chondrocalcinosis

The cause of chondrocalcinosis is not well known nor fully understood. However, there are certain risk factors for chondrocalcinosis, these include:

  • Dehydration
  • Intercurrent illness
  • Hyperparathyroidism (causing increased calcium in the blood)
  • Myxoedema, diabetes mellitus
  • Decreased phosphate or decreased magnesium
  • Any form of arthritis
  • Hemochromatosis
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Gout
  • Wilson disease – a liver disease caused by copper deposition
  • Physical trauma can lead to chondrocalcinosis in the injured joint

Almost half of the people over the age of 85 have the crystals present in their joints, but many of them do not have symptoms.
