According to the CDC, emphysema varies depending on the part of the lungs effected. People with centrilobular emphysema have problems in the upper lobes -- this is most commonly seen in smokers. Paraseptal emphysema affects the lower part of the lungs, and the panlobular type affects both the centrilobular and paraseptal areas. Stages range from mild stage 1 to severe stage 4.
