Radicchio or Cichorium intybus is a leaf chicory vegetable that belongs to the Asteraceae family. It has a bitter, spicy taste that becomes less pronounced when cooked. The health benefits of radicchio are many. It helps with symptoms of insomnia and is considered an effective blood purifier. The fat- and cholesterol-free vegetable is rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber and has large amounts of antioxidants and plant phytonutrients.
Radicchio's bitter taste comes from lactucopicrin intybin, a chemical compound that has a relaxing effect on the body and helps with sleep. It is also an effective natural analgesic and antimalarial agent and is beneficial in treating malaria symptoms.
