3. Types of Akathisia

There are four types of akathisia, categorized according to how the disorder starts and how long it lasts:

  • Acute akathisia lasts fewer than six months and tends to start after first taking the drug which causes the problem.
  • Chronic akathisia lasts more than six months following the most recent change in medication.
  • Tardive akathisia can develop following the other types of akathisia and can occur for a long time after stopping the offending drug. This type can last for years.
  • Withdrawal akathisia occurs after a person stops using certain drugs.
